Long minutes passed. Tied tight, the handkerchief had stemmed the flow of blood, making it harder for them to track him. More frustrated by the minute, they were making no attempt to move quietly. Stepped on or shoved out of the way, branches and twigs snapped as they began to close the gap between them and their prey.

Ray had to find a way to improve his odds. He kept moving, searching the ground as he went. There… to his right! He hobbled to a broken branch lying at an angle against a mossy tree trunk.

His head swiveled at the sound of Beau and Kam’s approach. They were getting close. They were practically on top of him now. He worked his way around the tree, evaluating the branch he had chosen for a weapon. It was long enough to help fend off a knife attack, but totally useless when it came to stopping a bullet. Its weight and mass made it suitable as a club.

He had a weapon and a plan, for what it was worth.

Hidden behind the trunk of the tree, Ray waited for them. It would be two against one, but if they came close enough, he would launch the first strike.

He started going over his options. Both ends of the branch were too blunt to inflict a stab wound, but a blow to the prick’s gun hand could knock the weapon free. Ray sighed at the futility of that. In the shape he was in, before he could get to the gun, either the bastard or his girlfriend would certainly reach it first. On the other hand, given the opportunity, he could crack the son-of-a-bitch over the head. Then, having only the girl to deal with, his chances of taking control of the situation would improve.

Ray heard them coming and tried to steady his breathing.

Within ten yards of him, Ray heard, “This isn’t getting us anywhere, Kam. We haven’t seen any blood for a while. Maybe he’s not hurt as bad as I thought. We’re screwed if he made it back to the campsite.”

“So, what do you want to do?”

There was a pause. “I’m not wasting any more time looking for that prick cop right now. I might’ve messed up. He and the other two could be in that boat, halfway across the lake already”

“You… make a mistake?” Kam said.

“Shut the hell up. We might still have time to stop them. C’mon.”

Ray heard them bolt away from him through the underbrush in the direction of the road.

Damn it! He was safe for the moment, but Dan and Art had no idea of the danger about to descend on them.

With no time to spare, Ray did his best to get to the camper. The sound of gunshots drew him up short just within sight of Dan’s property. No! No, no, no!

Ray dropped facedown on the ground. Breathing heavily, he looked around, trying to make sense of what was happening. He saw Beau and Kam return from the dock as Dan’s boat slowly sank beneath the water.
